Sofa Surfing-Housing Benefit

hi everyone,

Me and my parents were living over 5 years in a rented property. My Dad was getting DLA and my mum was getting Carer allowance, but her carer allowance stopped last month, because my Dad is diabetic 1 and he lost suddenly is memory (brain damage). At the moment,he is in care home. The nurse said to us,it could be permanently. My landlord took us to the court, because he wanted his property back.So he won the case and the bailiff evicted us last week.I went with my mum to the council and we registered homeless, but for housing association. We went last Tuesday, because we needed to see our caseworker, but she went on holiday and it will take two weeks, but someone from the desk assist us,because they told us straight we are not eligible for temporary accommodation, because I am 28 and needed have children and someone from our family must have a medical history, which has my dad but he is not with us.At the moment,Me and my mum sleeping on friends couch for 2 months .By the way,I am getting housing benefit and my friend want money for sleeping on the couch. My question is will the council find me somewhere like housing association and will the council pay me housing benefit to pay to my friend to sleep on the couch or do I need to ask him tenancy agreement ?

Thanks

Niros

Housing associations have replaced council housing in most cases. As you are two grown adults without disabilities then you are not a priority for housing. Why don't you look for housing yourself? there is help available to get loans for deposits etc.

No you won't get housing benefit to pay your friend for sleeping on her sofa. Why haven't you told your benefit office that your tenancy at the old property is over. They will find out and right now your overpayment is getting bigger by the day.

you could register on the council waiting list for property but, depending on the available housing stock in your area, it could take many years (in some areas it would not be uncommon for someone with no children/disabilities to wait 10 years +)
Have you looked for a private rental? The council should be able to provide a list of landlords that accept housing benefit tenants
