I don't think you are but don't get confused between digital swithover and high definition (HD)

See this site for details of the BBC trial and more about what you need to receive it

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/digital/tv/tv_hd.shtml

    that site says ....

Sky has a subscription HD service on satellite with a range of sport, films, arts and entertainment channels. Virgin Media has a subscription HD service on cable. Your retailer can tell you about the options.
How can I get HD TV?

To watch HD programmes, you need an HD-ready TV set and a set-top box which is designed for HD. You also need a satellite dish or cable connection.

so does that mean I will also nees another box as well as my cable box?

What do I need to watch High Definition TV?

To watch high definition you'll need a HD set-top box (like our V+ set-top box) and a HD ready television with a HDMI socket. V+ enables you to watch high definition programmes if you have a HD-ready TV. Take a look at our digital TV services available when buying V+.
How will high definition programmes be available to watch?
    • Virgin TV on demand
Watch high definition programmes and movies with Virgin TV on demand. This service comes with our V+ service and is a library of programmes that customers can access whenever they like and pause and rewind just like a DVD
    • High definition broadcast channels
Various broadcasters are planning to launch high definition channels, with our V+ service we offer the following:
      • BBC HD
Includes live sports coverage, plus spectacular series like Planet Earth as well as other documentaries and dramas.
So, you will need a V+ box and virgin tv subscription. No details of which programmes you could receive though other than the BBC test ones. Guess you could mail virginmedia and ask what is available now and coming up soon.
