now we have the dreaded logistical nightmare of changing surnames.

You don't have to change surnames though ? You can keep your own.

My Mrs and I did exactly what you propose for the same reasons. I just told everyone we'd changed things, the only ones to want to check were the bank, who wanted a copy of the wedding certificate. Everyone else just accepted it, and I guess have my name as a known alias or something - it was far less of a big deal than I imagined. 20 years since, no problems.

Oh I think the passport office wanted me to get something signed by a professional who'd known me, but it really wasn't a big deal. Never bothered with deed poll!

Posters have reported on here that some banks insist on a official document.

You say you want to start a 'new tradition'. For whom?

Any children you have may have the same attitude and change their name to something else so negating your 'tradition'.

OP is suggesting instead of having the tradition of keeping the family name, they start a new tradition of merging your name with your partners upon marriage.

Any children who had the same attitude would therefore be keeping the tradition rather than negating it.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Many years ago I did mine with an online deed poll service It was very simple. Just filled in on line with new surname, paid, paid a bit more for some extra certified copies (as you might need these to change passports etc). It was very simple. I think when I got the paperwork I only needed one person to countersign and didn't need to go to a solicitor for any of it. It was all totally simple and has never thrown up any problems.

my friends changed to a new surname after marriage; it suited them both well, and saved any hyphenation. I think it's lovely!

You don't have to have deed poll. The main advantage is that if you do it that way you can register it and get duplicates if you lose the original, but it is much simpler to do a straight forward change of name deed. Ideally, once you have signed it, get half a dozen certified copies done (copies stamped by a bank or solicitor to say they are true copies of the original) and then for most things (banks etc) you can provide a copy so you don't risk losing the original.

Then once you change your passport / driving licence you have new ID in the new name :)

For most day to day things just tell people your new name, but for banks, passports and the tax office you'll need *something* formal.

Good luck in your new life together
