Butlins Beware when booking

In May I booked 4 nights at Butlins, in July; 2 adults and one 7 year old.
Total Cost £949.80 for a Monday to Friday stay.
Slight change in circumstances my niece aged 3 is now coming, so I thought as I would upgrade to an apartment we had a bit of space not just a bed, so i checked online to see what apartments were available
Put in all the same details added my niece and upgrade to apartment.
Result; total cost 922.80 cheaper than my original holiday.
Now I didn't expect a refund but thought maybe just an admin fee.
No such luck, called Butlins they HAD to charge me the price at the time I booked.
Cost was now £1,346.80.
So if I booked now today the holiday now exactly the same it would be 922.80
It made me furious to spend 424.00 extra.
I understand price fluctuations and didn't expect a refund, and also thought a admin fee but how do they get away with charging Mays prices in June?

They only get away with it if people pay it.
They probably do it to prevent people booking cheaper accommodation early then swopping for a cheaper price for it nearer the time when the price has been reduced.0
