Warranty: Does it start from date of purchase or date of delivery

I purchased a Siemens IQ700 dishwasher on 22/06/2012 online from Currys. It came with a a 5 year warranty. I discovered my dishwasher stopped working last night. I called Siemens today and they say that they will not honour the warranty as it starts from the date of purchase and not the date of delivery. It was delivered 5-7 days after the date of purchase by a third party company on behalf of the manufacturer.

Please advise.

A warranty is in addition to your statutory rights and as such can have conditions.

If Siemens' warranty conditions say that it starts on the date of purchase than that is when it starts.
  • I don't have their warranty terms and conditions. When I called this is what the customer service representative said to me. She sounded clueless but she may be correct but they are obviously trying to obtain a chargeable engineer visit. I wanted clarification if there was legislation which governs this?

Would trading standards officers at my local council be able to advise?

The repair is likely going to be very expensive.

    Let me say it again...

"A warranty is in addition to your statutory rights and as such can have conditions".
This means that there is no legislation that says when a warranty begins. In fact, there is no legislation that says a manufacturer needs to even offer a warranty.
  • Their current warranty terms state that it applies from the date of purchase so I wouldn't be surprised if this has always been the case:

    3. All applications for this free 3 year extended warranty must be registered online via https://www.siemens-home.co.uk or by telephone on 0344 892 8999. The 3 year extended warranty period strictly applies from 2 years after the date of purchase and follows on from our standard 2 year manufacturers guarantee, giving you 5 years cover in total
