    Is this investing or saving?

If saving (i.e. with guaranteed capital) then go with a mini cash ISA if you don't already have one. These are great at the job of being an emergancy cash supply for if something unforeseen happens.

Once you have an emergancy fund (or before if you're a wild risk-taker ;)) you can thing about getting into investments (where your capital is at stake to some extent). Best bet would once again be an ISA to begin with, and if you want to diversify as much as possible with your capital, a few funds in a mini stocks and shares ISA wrapper are a nice addition to anyone's assets.

You could also consider shares (higher risk, possibly higher rewards), premium bonds (guaranteed capital but generally low returns for everyone but higher rate taxpayers), or a whole host of options in between depending on your attitude to risk!
