Sounds like you have a residual build up, possibly in the U Bend.

I would recommend Caustic soda, just make sure you follow the directions on the packet. You can get it from Hardware shops and places like B&Q.

It will completely clear the pipes.
  • thanks for asking this yraunaj - I was just about to ask the same thing :)

and thanks to all the replies too :)

I've got a similar problem, except I don't think it's hair/gunk...I think my DS has decided to stick 'something' down the plug, don't know what it is but no water is passing through at all even after plunging and caustic soda etc etc..

The sink is quite old and I think that if I loosen the u-bend I doubt I'll be able to fix it back again.

I'm at a loss, can't afford to get a plumber out

I've got one of these pango plungers http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=106149&MAN=Monument-1621r-Pango-Plunger
It's about £30.00 but look on it as an investment. My one has definitely paid it's way several times over.

It's great for drains, toilets, urinals, any plumbing really.

My hubby believes in a plunger, but this is so much quicker, easier, cleaner, and it finishes jobs that he couldn't do with his plunger:rotfl:

Isn't our subconscious a strange thing? I read through this (and many other) thread about 6pmish yesterday evening.

Later last night, when in bed, I had the most vivid dream about pulling loads and loads and loads of hair out of a bath plug hole

    Why?

Why didn't I dream about Divadee's planning app problem? Mumoftwins' eviction problem or things going in the freezer?

My mind never ceases to amaze me!

My bath seems to drain really slowly at the moment and I'm wondering if I might have a blockage. What can I use to try and unblock any stoppages in the drain? I've heard of caustic soda but I've got plastic pipework under my bath and I'm frightened of burning a whole through the plastic. Also, I've got a 3 year old and don't really to use strong chemicals around him.

I use a Kilrock Drainblock Buster, it fires a jet of water down through the drain breaking up and pushing the blockage ahead of it.
Its like a giant bicycle pump and it has saved me bothering with chemicals or plumbers for about 7/8 years now :)
  • Veet cream dissolves any hair blocking it! (I love the tips you can pick up on here!) Bicarb and vinegar will de-gunge a lot, especially if you pour them down and put the plug in.
