My son is doing a charity bike ride this summer, and we would like to be able to track and plot his progress.

Please does anyone know if there is a suitable programme or app we can use to do this remotely whilst he is riding?

thanks

+1 for strava. the only tech you need is a smart phone. you can also see where he is by tracking his phone online

    I've been Money Tipped!
Strava is great but you have to wait for the ride to finish and the data to be saved before you can see it.
If you want live data then it's mobile phone tracking that you need.

If he has an android phone or watch then you can just track it with google. I believe you can do the same with the iPhone etc.

I used to use endomondo app on my phone but like others have said Strava
One thing to remember is to turn on / off the GPS away from your house so bike thieves cant find out where you live and nick the bike.
Spending my time reading how to fix PC's,instead of looking at Facebook.

afaik strava does not start/finish at your house for that reason

Strava has a live tracking feature:

Yep, you can define privacy zones on Strava:

I use a Garmin Edge device with Livetrack when I'm out cycling on my own, depending on how serious the son is about cycling it's worth considering a GPS device. As well as gaining useful feature like livetrack it's also handy being able to keep an eye on the speed and gradient on the ride particularly for longer rides where getting pacing right is crucial.
