Hit a car when opening door - do I need to inform insurer?

As per title. I hit a car when I was opening the door. It left a dent and the occupant is now seeking payment for body work, which is fair enough.

Do I still need to inform my insurer about this given I wasn't driving at the time? I'm basically terrified of having my insurance cancelled for non disclosure and paying through my eyeballs for insurance the rest of my life.

Thanks.

Legally yes but in reality a lot of people wouldn't inform their insurers if it was being dealt with between the 2 parties involved.
However, there is always the risk of the other car owner telling their insurer in which case it will end up on the insurance database or they may decide to inflate the repair costs to make a bit of profit.

In the end, you are the only one who can decide what to do.
