Damaged motorcycle while in police care

Motorcycle got impounded by the police. It took me a while to get the funds together to get it back so they give it to motohog to auction the bike off. I contacted motohog and managed to get it returned to the impound yard yesterday.
I picked the bike up yesterday only to realize that the bike has suffered some damage while impounded. Scratches, chips and a massive crack in one of the panels.
Been told by a local garage that the bike needs basically a full respray. Because they have managed to do damage to just about every visible panel on the motorcycle.
The garage has quoted me £400 for a respray.
I called the impound yard and they said that the damage was done by motohog when they transported the motorcycle back to them. They said that motohog used a car transporter to move the bike which they believe resulted in the damage.
They said to write to the Vehicle Recovery Unit.
Does anyone have any advice on if i do have any grounds to stand on in regards to this?

Do you have any evidence (photos etc) that the bike was damaged whilst it was impounded?
Is the impound yard saying it left their care undamaged and was returned damaged?0 -
If it was given to motorhog to be auctioned I would imagine it stopped being your motorbike at this point if if was ready to be auctioned?0

Hard to prove any damage took place while it was impounded. Even photographs would only show how it looked on a particular date, not how any damage occurred. Do Motohog accept that they damaged the vehicle using a car transport?Manxman_in_exile wrote: »Do you have any evidence (photos etc) that the bike was damaged whilst it was impounded?
Why did the Police impound the vehicle in the first place? Was it abandoned or parked illegally? No road tax?
Why was it left so long impounded that it actually went for Auction?0 -

I don't believe this to be right.Manxman_in_exile wrote: »Do you have any evidence (photos etc) that the bike was damaged whilst it was impounded?

The police taken pictures of the bike when they impounded it. So images do exist proving the damage was done whilst impounded. Getting these images might prove difficult however.
Yes the impound yard are saying that they never damaged the bike. That Motohog used a car transporter to return the motorcycle resulting in the damage.0 -

The police won't have sent your bike to auction. At the point it was disposed of by them legally you were no longer the owner. I doubt very much it has been returned to you or even the fact this is a true event.0
