On another thread here, about food frugality, someone cooked half a pumpkin to find it tasted like nothing at all except the chicken stock she'd added. The other half went into the composter.

There aren't half some boring vegetables out there.

Ah! But but but, pumpkin is like marrow......... it has a very subtle flavour, so it's all in the what you do with it.

Do you know, as a child, I adored marrow, skin and all. A bit surprising, given the subtlety of the flavour.
    I still really like it.

I'm not a pumpkin-cooking expert, though. Pumpkins weren't around in my childhood. At least, only in fairy-tales!
I'm trying to think of when I first saw some in the shops..................... possibly the mid to late 80s? Dunno.

I do know that the first time I carved one, it took ages and was very difficult. Maybe it wasn't ripe enough.

Now I've got one made of terracotta! :D

Given that no one eats pumpkin skin and that it has only been outside for 2 hours and is still intact with no [STRIKE]hacking[/STRIKE] carving, why not use it in the same way that you would any other pumpkin eg soup or chopped and oven baked?

It's not as if spiders can have crept inside it or the inside is full of candle wax, or am I missing something?

That is exactly the point - it remains a pumpkin.....

I am fairly fond of marrow and the kids are ok with it too - especially if I refer to it as striped courgette.

the only cooked pumpkin I have ever experienced is pumpkin pie and I have to say I am not a fan. I suspect it is going in the green bin, I don't suppose the local food bank would want it!
    I think....

You can put it in stews.
Or roast it. Everything is nice roasted!

I remember my Dad in the 1960s bravely carving a turnip/swede with his Stanley knife :D

I would have thought that any recipe that uses butternut squash could be used for pumpkin.

Just watched Novella and several more plates of yummy loveliness. How is that woman not the size of a small house? Unfair!

I asked DW that. She said “Drugs?”
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Thanks for understanding my question GDB, I hadn't realised that my tablet has corrected my spelling again. Unless it's me Mrs GDB thinks is on the drugs for asking such a strange question.

That Nigella Lawson, you can read her like a book... a very thin one.

She may cook the food, but she doesn't have to eat it!

Sometimes, by the time I've finished preparing, chopping, frying, baking, etc. and then tasting for seasoning and finally licking the spoon, I've filled up on the aromas and said spoon-licking, and am not hungry any more!
