If the kettle boiled as I walked into the kitchen the pile of washing up to be done would grow!

I have a technique to avoid that.
When I cannot get any more in the sink, or cannot get my coffee machine filling jug or a water bottle under the tap - I finish emptying the dishwasher and reload it with the contents of the sink, then carry on "topping up" the dishwasher until either it's full or I've run out of plates/cutlery/whatever.
Then I run the dishwasher and the cycle starts again.

So what sort of motor would you need on the curtains? And how reliable would it be? I mean, you don't want the curtains to get stuck halfway closed. When you're away from home.
    :o

Well, you can get curtain rails with pull strings where one goes up as you pull the other down to move the curtains - one possibility would be to tie the two strings together wrapped around a pulley or drum on the motor and have a control to run the motor forwards or backwards to open or close the curtains.

Or does Alexa conjure up a genie, curtains for the closing/opening of?

Just a thought; if I were to have an Alexa, she might take a fancy to Siri, and they would scarper off together into the night, leaving me quite alone. :(
    With curtains stuck half open.
And the kettle full of cold water.

Oh sorry. I saw that the other day, but forgot you were the thread thingy. :o

If the curtains get stuck halfway, the motor will burn out and set fire to your home. Stilll, it's a small price to pay for being at the cutting edge of technology.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Easily avoided by proper design - either have an overload cutout on the motor or limit the time or number of rotations that the motor will run. A rotation limit would be better because that would allow the curtains to be partly opened/closed and fully opened/closed later.

Alternatively, and even easier, just pull the damned things by hand ;)

Good luck with the half Marathon Nikkster :)

PN I watched Long Lost Family. Such a shame she missed meeting her mother :( but her sisters are lovely :)

My friend's husband grew up thinking he was an only child, but was researching the family tree. One day he got an email saying something like "I know this sounds mad, but from the details you've given, I think my son-in-law must be your nephew." And he was! Turned out my friend's husband had two older half-siblings he hadn't known about, though sadly one had died. He's now in regular contact with his sister and her family and is so happy :)

One of my HUGE fears has always been bathroom extractor fans - I can't bear them as I fear they're silently overheating, dusty, setting fire to dust, whatever ...

When people moved into the new builds the house remained empty - and, since that Friday, four weeks ago now, the bathroom light has been left on - and the extractor running 24/7.

Now, if I go outside and can't hear it I'll be more scared than the first time I went outside and heard it!

I'm sorry if I worried you, PN.

So, let me see.......... when your dishwasher has finished cleaning the dishes, etc., you leave the stuff in it, except when you need something, then put the dirty dishes in the sink until the sink is full.

Then you empty out what's left of the clean stuff in the dishwasher, and transfer the sink dishes to the dishwasher.

I can't work out if that is more or less ergonomic than emptying the dishwasher in one go, and then putting each dirty dish straight into the dishwasher instead of via the sink holding bay.

Can anyone work out which is the more time and arm-energy efficient?

I was exaggerating - actually I emptied the DW today, while the toast was doing, and there was very little actually in the sink waiting to be transferred.
    ;)
