Removing ceramic tiles from an asbestos tiled floor

Hi. I just moved house and would like to re-do the kitchen. To my horror, it looks like the previous owner has cemented ceramic tiles straight over an asbestos tiled floor! I'd like to get rid of the ceramic tile without disturbing the asbestos tiles underneath. Is this possible??

This is recommended because you shouldn't try to lift the asbestos tiles and the safest thing is to lock them down under ceramic tiles.

  • I've read that it would have been better the encapsulate the tiles in a latex self leveling compound first, so tiling and re-tiling doesn't become an issue.

I'm certain it would have been better, but the previous owner couldn't afford / couldn't be bothered to do both, so tiled directly over it.

Here's hoping the tiles are a neutral colour!
