Vaccum Sealer ? Plastic Bags? Or Tubs?

Hi there Everyone

Just wanted to pick your brains...:D

I am getting through a silly amount of plastic bags...and have even resorted to putting stuff into bags, tieing a knot in the bag...putting more in and tieing again.. so i get 2 portions of carrots etc to one bag... partly because i can't stand wasting money, and partly because i don't want to be throwing loads of plastic stuff away:confused:

Now, i have seen a vacuum sealer in the supermarkets here for about £15... refills about £2... will have to check on quantity on there.. Now i understand that food stays fresh longer in vacuum pack conditions... but still i would be throwing away plastic...and at the moment i have managed to organise myself so that food never needs to be thrown away anyway :D

Soooo do i just invest in more plastic containers and eliminate the need to throw so many plastic bags away? but then i won't get as much in my freezer.. but it will stack better...

Any advice would be great.... especially if you have a vacumm packer and have found it to be a good investment..

Many thanks all

I know this doesn't help you in Germany, but I bought 17 pieces of 'tupperware' in Ikea for £2.99. Some of them are a little small, but I'm sure I'll find something to freeze in them! I've been using plastic bags too, but washing them out is a hassle and I want to reduce plastic throughouts too!

Not very eco-friendly, but Poundland (Pfundland, or even Euroland?!?) do 700 little plastic bags, or 500 of the medium sized for......£1! Much cheaper than the supermarkets.

    Hi there

I have only been in IKEA twice..the first time i wandered around with hubby... moaning about the state of the place and how was i suposed to see stuff stuck up on shelves... stomped out vowing to never go there again.. It wasn't until i was talking to my brother - that i found out that we had gone straight into the warehouse area where you pick stuff up!!! didn't know that the showroom bit was upstairs :rotfl: :rotfl: ....will never live that one down:o

IKEA, from what i gather are still cheaper than most other places aren't they? out here to be honest most stuff is cheaper than the Uk... i think because they pay such high taxes - so have less money left at the end of it. We are luck as hubby is in the army...so we pay UK taxes but then get the shopping at German prices...anything over 50euros and we can get it tax free, pay no car tax, no TV liecence and petrol is just under half what it is in the UK-again as we pay no tax.... it makes you realise just how expensive stuff can be in the UK....

I LOVE my Lock & Lock.
I've stopped using sandwich bags for my boys packed lunches and now put their sandwiches in a small L&L container. Less bags used so cheaper and less rubbish!
Also with L&L if they accidently drop the box on the floor the lid will not come off! :)

I find though, that if I let a precious container out of the house without myself as an escort, it goes AWOL.

I visited my local paper supplies person, well, he actually sells bags/containers/plastic cups etc etc.
I bought both the plastic microwaveable tubs and some of the foil ones.

Now all I have to do is get cooking and fill the things.
