I'm thinking of buying, but would I be covered if there was a problem?

Ebay do. Paypal don't. As long as you don't pay as a guest on Ebay they will cover you.
It also has to be a tangible card rather than a code, Ebay will cover you.
Paypal does not offer buyer protection for gift cards.
Not covered - purchases of items equivalent to cash (including, without limitation, stored value items such as gift cards and pre-paid cards);0
