Best way to send a high value small parcel to USA ??

I have just sold a high value item to a buyer in the USA.

It seems I had unchecked the Ebay GSP option, so I have now to send the item to the USA directly.

It's quite a high value item (well, for me anyway) at just under £750

It's not very heavy and the parcel would easily fit in a box 20 x 10 x 6 cm

Which would be my best shipping option please ... Royal Mail or a courier

I would need insurance too.

Finally, are there any special postal requirements for USA parcels

How much does it weigh? 'Not very heavy' could mean anything!

Presume your listing made clear buyer is responsible for any taxes, import duty etc?

Not packed yet, but will be well under 1kg and could possibly be under 500g

    No !

I don't normally sell anything to America .. not through choice, just the way things work out. i can not actually remember selling anything to the USA before.

I therefore never thought about taxes etc

Upwards of £80 with ParcelForce. Around £20 from MyHermes International (that only covers you for loss up to £20 - you'd need to check their website for how much the extra cover would cost).

Might be wise to check the recipient understands they are responsible for import costs - ebay expects you to make this explicit if you aren't using the GSP.

Have you a link to the eBay advice about sellers explaining about import taxes ? I've been selling for so long that I'm still working on the advice from 18 years ago which was sellers must stay out of advising buyers as it was the buyers responsibility to be aware of their own countries import details.

I certainly have nothing at all in my listings and would be interested in what other business sellers add to their listings.

Edit|. I found it, strangely though I couldn't see it earlier.

Customs and import charges: In the description section of your listing, clearly indicate that responsibility for any customs or import duties is with the buyer

How do you book with Fedex ?

I see I can go through Interparcel.com but I can not see the insurance costs, unless I actually place the order.

I need the see the total cost first, so i can invoice the chap

Invoice him for the postage costs? Did you listing specifically say the buyer was responsible for these? If not, you are.
