Its perfectly correct, you should have chased it up when you didnt get a receipt
Unless you can prove you sent it off you dont have a case
IF you did everyone would do it when fined0 -
Just out of interest does the SORN declaration form say on it ,
"you must recieve a return confirmation within 4 weeks for it to be valid if you do not then you must contact us to chase it up"
A pity I shredded mine the other day so I can't check. It would be very shoddy if they did not give such a warning on the form.0 -
From the tax renewal/SORN form :
"You should receive an acknoledgement letter within 4 weeks of declaring SORN. Contact DVLA customer enquiries if you do not receive an acknoledgment letter"
But tbh it's easy to forget about it. For next time, it's easy to just declare SORN online, you get an email receipt for it0 -
get in touch with your dvla office in person or on the phone.
i find these things can be sorted this way rather than by letter0 -
This happened to me many years ago, got sent the your guilty pay up now or pay more later letter (I hate the assumion they make), anyway luckily I'd taken a copy of the SORN and sent it in to them with a cheque for the fine and a covering letter complaining I'd done my bit by following the SORN instructions and it was not my fault that a problem has arisen between me and them, and that by enclosing a cheque I wasn't agreeing to there guilty statement and was only enclosing it to avoid a higher unjust fine (I wrote it nicer). Got a nice letter back saying they were happy with my statement and were closing the case and returning my cheque.
But now if the above happens you've got no chance as they've covered themselves with the 'within 4 weeks' statement
Lesson I learnt from this - never trust the post and/or dvla - now when a need to have a vehicle SORN'd I hand the form in at the post office and get a receipt there and then.0 -
>>Unless you can prove you sent it off you dont have a case<<
This is not strictly true.
I can tell you the SORN system has more holes in it than the proverbial .......
Write a firm but polite letter back to them, stating that you did, without doubt, send in the SORN form. Tell them that they cannot prove you didnt - anymore than you can prove you did ! ( normally although of course we'll come back to that later - the item that you forgot you had !!)
Explain to them, ie, remind them because sometimes they forget, that millions of letters posted every year do indeed get lost - and that your one was very obviously one of them.
See what they say to to that.
As an ace up your sleeve, you can either include this with the above letter - or keep it back until if you need to write a further letter, because they still havnt got the point, tell them that you will supply a *photocopy*of the SORN form that you sent in when you did. ( You know the one - the one that you have in your sideboard! )
I wish you all the best and stick to your guns. The sorn lark is a farce.
Remember - you are looking to save 40 to 80 quid here!

DVLAlose letters and documents all the time though they dont like to admit it,
