Reduction to replacement value

I was given a replacement value for my car which was written off - another driver's fault. I had to ring the company recovering the vehicle to say I had personal possessions to collect from it. During the same call I was asked if I was happy with the replacement value figure - I said I'd been looking on the internet and hadn't found a similar car at that cost so no. It was suggested I find out the cost of any optional extras which I did and emailed them back the next day.
Went to collect my possessions and the car had already been collected!! Rang to ask why etc and was told btw we've reduced the value by over £300 as it was higher than average mileage. Original email/letter said they had thoroughly researched the figure including based on mileage. Can they do this??!!! Going round in circles.
