Trade plate owners

Can anyone help me with a query?

We returned from holiday last week to find a Fiat Mobile home parked directly outside our terraced house, on a public road. Parking is already tight on the street as it is a slip road off a dual carriageway so we can only park on one side and many gardens have been turned into drives.

None of the neighbours know who this vehicle belongs to but it has a trade plate in the dashboard window. The DVLA say it is taxed until May 2018 but it is also listed as SORN?

Not trying to be a NIMBY but we have had issues where people have dumped stolen cars on the road before. We phoned the local garage to see if it was theirs but we had no joy.

Any ideas how we can find the owners of trade plates or the vehicle other than having to go to the police?

Its illegally parked. Trade plates are for moving cars only, and they shouldnt be parked on a public road with the trade plate on it.

Your local police will know whos plates they are (when i had them the police had to come out and do a check)
  • Thanks Paul. That's what I wanted to know - it just all seemed a bit odd and with the issues with dumped cars in the past, we wondered what was going on. Will give the police a call.

That doesn't make sense. It's either SORNed or it's taxed. If it's taxed, it doesn't need trade plates.

Whether it's on trade plates or not makes no difference to whether it's parked legally or not. If you can park there legally, without causing an obstruction, then that can be parked there legally.

Its a misuse of the trade plates and if its on a SORN it shouldnt be parked on a public road.

Sure. But that doesn't make the parking itself illegal.

True, however the point being it shouldnt be there in the first place because trade plates dont cover a SORN'd parked car, therefore it should be (re)moved.

A car can be legally parked, however be parked illegally if you know what i mean - which is whats happening here.

Although there is some confusion about whether it's taxed or SORNed. If it is taxed, then the trade plates are unnecessarily on the dash, and carry no weight at all. And it's undeniably legal.
