Why does my PC hang after an update?

I keep getting this problem when I update my PC. I thought I'd sorted it and it seems to have come back, apologies if I did ask this before- I can't remember where I asked or what was advised and I can't remember what if anything was suggested, it's not a virus, malware or anything that a scan seems to pick up.

What happens is that Windows runs the update and it doesn't matter if I ask it to shut down or restart afterwards, it gets past the boot up page and the logo page and then the screen is black with a spinning wheel. I can leave it for hours and that wont change.

What does seem to work is pressing the F4 or F5 key when the PC is starting up again, when the boot page shows but before the logo page. Apparently this interrupts the disk-checking and gets me to the home page and a working PC again, but it keeps happening and I've no idea what I can do to fix this beyond dropping £200 (recent quote) to have the computer looked at by a computer diagnostician (if that is the correct term for them).

Before I start saving, I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions, bare in mind as much as I try to be, I am embarrassingly not as technically minded with PC software as I should be.

Can you give us the spec, ie W10?, make, model etc.

Try this: if W10 press M$ and 'R' keys together, type in cmd, right-click cmd and select run as administrator, then type in
sfc /scannow (note space) and let it run. It will tell you if any system files have been repaired or not.

First off i would sack the guy quoting £200 to look at this, that price is ludicrus

Any decent side street computer shop should look at this for £40 - £50 providing the issue is just software related

Try Sicards suggestion and also a check disk
(In the same windows as you did the above, type chkdsk /r)

^^^^ yes, do not go with the £200 option!!!!

It does sound as if there may be a disk problem (amongst other possibilities) so the advice already posted is a good start.

Sicard, do note OP is somebody claiming they are not technical so might not understand your instructions too well (?) such as the M$ key(?????). Might be a good idea to explains a bit more or even give the alternatives to get to the command prompt?....just a suggestion!

Uninstall the Anniversary Update using Safe Mode.Restart your computer. On the sign-in screen, hold the shift key down while selecting Restart from the Power menu in the bottom-right corner. Your computer will reboot into the Advanced start menu, select Troubleshoot.
    Click on Advanced Options.
    Click on Startup Settings.
    Click on Restart.
Select option 4 or press F4 to boot in Safe Mode.
Open Settings. Click on Update & security.
Click on Recovery. Under "Go back to an earlier build",
click the Get started button and follow the on-screen directions to complete the task.
