Carpets low down

I am not an expert at all just keen to see if others agree this is the best way to get decent carpets cheaply.

There are three types of people who sell carpets:

Fitter's who supply and fit

Carpet chains like carpet right

Independent carpet shops

I have found the carpet chains the most expensive. Sometimes to a ridiculous degree! But they often offer price match.

The cheapest seem to be independent carpet shops. Who sometimes supply and fit for half as much as the chain but are potentially less reputable and have less good fitters.

I think the best way is to force carpet chain stores to price match the indi shops. I got a carpet supplied and fitted by a chain for less than half the price they originally were selling for.

I prefer to find a reliable independent and stick with them. I hate how the chains will have a 'discounted' carpet but rip off on the underlay etc.

I think the best option is what I do. A local carpet fitter who used to work for one of the big chains many moons ago, but now just works by himself ( worth noting that most carpet retailers sub-contract the fitting to self-employed fitters anyway ).

Anyhow, he's happy to fit a carpet that I buy from wherever. But invariably, he can get the same thing cheaper from "I don't know where", presumably because he's spent years in the trade and gets a discount.

Of course you can always haggle at any retailer - you may or may not get a result, but there's nothing to stop you trying.

And don't forget, with carpets you need to look at the total price - underlay varies enormously in price, and can be as important, if not more so, than the quality of the carpet. If you're lucky enough to find an independent guy you trust ( word of mouth, as ever ), who can supply and fit, then that's your best option. Let's just say, my local guy is snowed under with work, and we live in a very small village - people from miles around want him to do their carpets :)

We get a price for doing a whole house at the end of a renovation, a carpet fitter with a few sample books in the back of his van doesn't have the overheads of premises and gives us a better price than any store, maybe £200 less on a typical job. They like the jobs as its a completely empty property and they use 12mm underlay (I think - its very thick and comfy) and always do a top job.

  • My price included 10 mill underlay. We had a couple of fitters round to the house and they aid they couldn't beat the price. May well be better Fitter's though

    Local independent every time

So they don't have so many books to view but they tend to only have good quality suppliers. I ordered mine, they came and remeasured, gave me a really good price, gave me the numbers of the fitters they worked with. Both the carpet and the fitters arrived on day they said and the fitters done a fantastic job.

I got excellent quality Capet, pure wool, made on the Isle of Man , supplied and fitted for a hell of a lot less then carpet right wanted for a synthetic carpet with a six week delivery

Doesn't really matter, they'll all subcontract it to the local carpet fitters.

    Get carpet from wherever.

Get underlay from online and carpet bars, grippers from online or Wilko. It's much cheaper than the big shops.
