I had a life outside the place! There was one staff member who always arrived as early as allowed and would stay as late as allowed, therefore building up loads of flex. When I asked what they did on the flexi days off, the answer was 'Nothing really'. Sadly they had so little in their life outside work they would rather spend the time in the office.
I'd rather spend an extra, say, 1 hour/day in the office for two weeks and have the whole every 2nd Friday off! That'd be like a long weekend every fortnight without biting into annual leave.
I'd rather have a whole day off from annoying colleagues/the boss, than an hour per day less time with them.
Maybe the person's not paid that well and they save money on not driving in that day too! Reducing their vehicle running costs. Additionally, maybe they don't earn enough "to do things".... every time you leave the house it costs you money .... doing nothing is very MSE.0 -

When I was on flexi I always went in as early as possible, Never stayed late and always managed to build up just enough to take the allowed days (ours was only two).
I was of course joking with the "shame on you" but I loved my days off0 -

If you never stayed 'late' you couldn't build up any flex. 'Late' is doing anything over the basic contracted hours. The only way I built up even the 3 days was from the odd occasion where they needed somebody to stay until 5 in the event of the person who'd agreed it calling in sick.
For me, it wasn't the colleagues I wanted to get away from, it was the job. It was utterly soul destroying to be told that the only thing which mattered was the number of claims processed in a day. Whether they were processed correctly was of no importance as sorting out the mess was down to another team. That view of the world was stressed to me on numerous occasions by my Team Leader. The only stat being measured for the team was the number of claims cleared.:(0 -
Some places won't let you do this, though. In some places, although they notionally operate flex, you can't work extra hours without permission. So you might be allowed to stay late to cover someone's unforeseen absence, but not to come in early to do extra work
(Not really flexitime, IMHO, but we all know some companies and managers are rubbish, don't we!

I was just clarifying for the OP who hadn't come across flexi. At DWP you could take up to 3 days per month with a maximum of 20 days per year. I only ever built up 3 days in total in all the years I was there. I couldn't wait to get out of the place after doing my 7 hr 24 minutes each day.
Before people laugh at 7h 24m, that works out exactly, 37 hrs per week, because pre flexi time Civil Service hours in provincial offices were Mon - Thu, 7h 30m, Fri 7h. London offices only had to work 36 hours.
In the VOA (part of HMRC) we could have a credit (or debit) of 37 hrs at the end of each 4 week accounting period. Because of a build up of flexi and annual leave, I was able to retire a few weeks before my due date.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
If I did land the job I'd rather start a bit early because I will be up ready from seeing the school bus off anyway. May as well accrue a bit more leave than sit around waiting to start. Thanks everyone!0

I was Civil Service with a 37 hour working week. That's where the 7 hr 24 min working day comes in. We could start any time after 7:30 which is why I made the comment about not being able to build up flex without working 'late'. I'd take my 1/2 hour lunch (minimum allowed), and then be out of there like a rat up a drainpipe once I'd completed the required hours
and minutes. :-) Officially we didn't even have any core hours.0
