Flexi Days

A job I have applied for has 28 days holiday and 10 'flexi days'. What is this? Could it be an extra 10 unpaid days?

    It means you can work extra hours and take it as leave for up to 10 days in a year - so if you have a 7 hour working day then 70 hours worked extra can be taken as additional leave. Any hours worked over the 70 hours will probably be lost, although you might be lucky and find they're paid as overtime.

    I've had it applied in a rather better way than this. Under the scheme I had, you could accrue extra hours worked and take them ALL back, as long as you were in the office for core hours (10-4 IIRC). So you could take an hour off (assuming you had an hour's extra in your balance) any day you liked, by arriving later or leaving earlier. However, on 10 days a year you could use seven of your accrued extra hours to take a whole day off.

    Definitely worth planning to work up to an hour extra every single day, in my view!

    I think the majority of flexi systems have a limit to the number of flexi days you can take in a month so you wouldn't be able to build up 10 days worth of flexi and take them all in one go.
    You may also be able to go into deficit i.e. owe them time, although that's not something I would recommend. Where I worked you could only build up 3 days flex, or be 3 days down. There wasn't a limit on the time you could be in that situation, but if you went over 3 days up you simply lost the time. Taking is as paid overtime wasn't an option.

    Yes, agreed, I wasn't meaning to imply that 10 days' flexi could be taken in one go. The company I worked for had a limit of a day a month, but I didn't mention that in my original reply as it obviously meant that their limit was 12 days a year :)

    I was just clarifying for the OP who hadn't come across flexi. At DWP you could take up to 3 days per month with a maximum of 20 days per year. I only ever built up 3 days in total in all the years I was there. I couldn't wait to get out of the place after doing my 7 hr 24 minutes each day.

    I had a life outside the place! There was one staff member who always arrived as early as allowed and would stay as late as allowed, therefore building up loads of flex. When I asked what they did on the flexi days off, the answer was 'Nothing really'. Sadly they had so little in their life outside work they would rather spend the time in the office.

    Flexi days are great, but you can't assume that you'll ever be able to take them... this isn't something you'll discover until you try to.

    As people have said, you can do overtime where the hours are banked and then there will be rules saying how you can cash in those hours and take extra days off. e.g. if you did one hour's overtime each day, then after about three weeks you would have accumulated enough to have a "flexi day off".

    Taking the time off can be a problem in some working environments as you find that they're too busy to let you have the time off and then you "lose" it.

    You can't tell what the culture is until you work there though.
