Hello lovely MSE people! :j

Random question, posed on behalf of OH's parents:

They have recently moved house.
In the old house they had a freeview box which also recorded and played DVDs/Cds (they really like the ability of this)
In new house reception downstairs drops out if you put a TV upstairs, so the guy who lived there before had freesat.
OH's dad wants to know if he can get a freesat receiver box, but also have that connected to the old recorder (which was freeview, not looking to keep the freeview, just the recording facility) then I guess connect that on to the TV?

I've googled it but can't get a definite answer. Can't get too technical or OH's Dad won't understand :rotfl:

Can anyone help!
Thanks in advance

Assuming oh dad wishes to connect a TV to the freesat output....
If there is a spare output on it that matches with an auxiliary input on the freewiew recorder (scart to scart or hdmi to hdmi) then it is likely you can record what you are watching! -manually.
To playback you need a second compatible input on the TV connected to the recorder output.

Might be a good idea to post the model numbers of all the devices so that someone can respond with more certainty!

What you will not be able to do is feed the satellite signal into the freeview box to allow it to act as a receiver and program recording programmes as if it was receiving Freeview.

Can you not get a Freeview antenna installed?

Yes. Make sure the Freesat recorder (go for a 'FreeTime' box if you want on-demand stuff) has a SCART output as well as HDMI.
Connect the HDMI to the TV, connect the SCART to the AV input on the Freeview/DVD recorder. Hopefully it has SCART in (or 2 way), if not, S-Video would be second best, along with red and white phono for sound. If no S-Video, then Yellow phono for picture, and red and white phono for sound. Then you select the AV input on the Freeview/DVD to record from the Freesat recorder.
If you could let us know the model mumber of the Freeview/DVD box we can give more specific advice.
Not sure why he really wants to do this, why not just use the recording facilty of the Freesat box? Or does he love burning DVDs?

I'd have thought that no, you can't connect a freesat box to a freeview recorder and expect it to record. The freeview recorder expects to receive the signal from the ariel input, whereas the output from the freesat box is presumably going to be a video signal. I'd be surprised if the freeview recorder had an AV input. (Well, all I can say is that my humax freeview recorder doesn't...)

If the problem is that plugging in a second TV degrades the signal from the ariel, have you tried using an active splitter (ie with an amplifier) ? That would require getting access to a power supply where you split the signal (in the attic, perhaps). Unless you can find a battery-powered one.

The OP's machine is a DVD recorder with a Freeview tuner, so in general they will record from the scart input.

It's unclear if it's also a HDD recorder as well, but that's not really relevant to the recording question.

    Oh, okay, fair enough.

Presumably there's would be a significant drop in quality, if the freesat box has to decode the digital signal and render analogue video output, and then the recorder has to re-encode it for DVD. I guess if it record hdmi input it wouldn't be quite so bad.

OP: if you have a pc, a cheap way to get recording is to get a usb decoder stick (either freeview or freesat - I have the former), and then the PC can record the transmission, and you have the option to write that to DVD.
