Laptop Touchpad Buttons

I have a problem with touchpad left button on laptop, when I press it once, it is as if I clicked two or even three times.

This is driving me nuts, if I close a window it closes any underneath it too, if I click on something it goes too far.

I had this problem a few years ago on another laptop and somehow it seems to be happening again.

Last time I bought replacement buttons off eBay but problem remained.

Then I changed laptop so never got to the bottom of it, now it is back!

I have done a check for malware, adware, anythingelseware and all is fine.

I checked in control panel for settings and all seem fine.

I checked the driver in device manager and again seems fine, driver is unchanged from 2010.

The only thing that has changed recently is that I had to uninstall and reinstall flash as I was getting shockwave plugin errors.

I feel sure that it is a software issue because it seems worse at different times of the day but that may just be me.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and whether it is hardware or software, I can buy replacement buttons on eBay but they are not new, so may have same issue.

Any helpful suggestions gratefully received.

    Hi

I use a separate mouse, and probably could achieve what your experiencing if I set the repeat rate to a ridiculous value.

So perhaps there is a setting for the repeat action that could be changed.

    Thanks for your reply.

I checked the Mouse settings in control panel, they have a setting for how quickly you have to press double click, none of the settings make a difference, except they could make it worse if it was set to slow.

It it hard to explain how difficult this makes using the laptop,

It seems to me it is over processing the depression of the mouse key, as if I had hit it 5 times in rapid succession.

I have seen weird trackpad activity in the past if I plug in an external disk via USB but tht does not affect the buttons.

Just wondering if it is hardware or software issue, do not want to spend money on a replacement if it is software. also I want to be able to determine whether it is fixed. I have no error messages, nothing in events, no yellow or red icons in device manager.
