Freezing Ready-Grated Cheese?

If I buy a large bag of ready-grated cheese can I freeze it in portion size amounts? I'm worried it might freeze into solid lumps, and that I do not want!

    I have a box of grated cheese both ready grated and cheese I grated myself in the freezer All yellow stickers reductions. Just take it out of the freezer 45 mins before using. It's fine for jacket potatoes, topping lasagne etc. Not suitable for cheese sandwiches.

    Yes, it works. I used to (when we ate cheese) buy huge value blocks, grate it all in front of a movie, then freeze in portions.

    I freeze lots of grated cheese, usually have a session with the food processor where I grate 2 or 3 400 gm blocks. I wash and keep the empty press seal bags that cheddar comes in and almost fill them. When it comes out of the freezer, if it seems to be in clumps, I whack the bag on the counter top a couple of times and place in fridge. If having a dis-organised day and not removing from freezer in good time I use it from frozen for scrambled eggs, quiche, sauce, toppings etc. I use sliced cheese from the block for sandwiches, rolls etc.

    I'm talking about ready-grated, not blocks to grate myself. I want to be able to sprinkle it on pizzas, jacket potatoes, pasta, etc. straight from the freezer, not have to defrost it.

    It wouldn't take long to defrost but as above, give the clumps a bash to break it up a bit then use.

    I'll give it a try. Buying in bulk is the way to go but storing all these bulk bargains is a whole new art!

    I've just discovered from a US forum that you can freeze uncooked rice (allegedly) so the weevils don't get in it. Wonder if that works for flour? (hmmm... off to Google):)

    If find the bags of ready grated cheese tend to clump less when frozen than when you grate and freeze it yourself so it should be fine for sprinkling.

    Hi, yes you can freeze ready grated cheese, defrosts just the same as before it as frozen.

    I do this all the time .. If the grated cheese is YS I just pop straight in the freeze then just grab a handful or two when I need it .. Always handy to have in.
    I mainly use for quiche, lasagne toppings and melted on pizza or garlic bread
