No ip address

Every now and then my laptop refuses to connect to the Internet and tells me it can't get an IP address. It's having the same hissy fit now.

I've done the turn off the router bit, no difference. But weirdly my iPad has no problem connecting and nor does the tv. Laptop and iPad connecting by wifi, tv on powerline.

Any idea about why this happens and how to fix it?

What sort of signal strength are you getting with the laptop? Do you use it in the same general area as the iPad or from further away?

open a Command Prompt as Admin (right-click on it and Run As Admin)

type: netsh winsock reset catalog / (note the space before the /) press enter

    then, type: ipconfig /release (enter)
    then ipconfig /renew (enter)

and see how it is then...

this may be worth a read/follow directions too...

Try to change the IP address by installing VPN Software like cyberghost.

I've had a few rare problems with DHCP in the past. (DHCP is a service on your router that allocates IP addresses automatically to the attached devices.)

I'd try allocating a static IP address to the laptop via the router's interface. If that doesn't help, try setting the IP manually on the laptop's network settings.

Ta. The distance from laptop and ipad to the router was identical(I ended up having to use the two together), so it's not the strength of the wifi signal that is the problem. It takes several hours and then the problem rights itself - but in the meantime it blocks access to the internet and means that I can't work effectively, so I really want to be able to fix it when it happens.

I'll store those ideas for the next time.

Oh, just because one device can get a signal, doesn't mean another will.

The aerials will be of different sensitivities, and with two wireless devices next to each other, the transmission of one might drown out the reception of the other.

And even in slightly different positions, you might hit a peak or trough in signal strength or interference.

    Hi

My router shows what is currently connected.

It also has the option to assign an IP address to this machine, 192.168.0.13 as it happens, and my plug in WiFi usb sticks are also allocated for the odd occasion I use an old machine or an early raspberry Pi.

So no conflicts, and I set the lease time for a week which seems to be the max.

So please take a few tentative steps and ask again when you need to.

That's kind-of what I meant. Try it first on the router (which is most likely to have flaky DHCP in my experience). If that doesn't work also set IP settings on the local machine.

I try not to override DHCP on the local machine, just because I'll forget, change routers, and then (briefly) be puzzled as to why a machine can't get on the network! :o

Also, mobile devices might not connect to other networks with a locally-set static IP address (I presume).
