why is my credit card not accepted?

Many years ago, I bought a souvenir video at the Grand Canyon with a UK card. The person in front of me had their American Express card rejected.
The trouble with car hire companies, is that they delegate a lot of authority to the local branch ; so you don't know that any particular payment method will be accepted, until you are driving away.0 -
There are a few references around the web to Enterprise not accepting unembossed credit cards, so it's worth checking. For example:All major Credit and Debit cards (excluding Solo, Visa Electron, Diners Club and all unembossed maestro/debit/creditcards) are accepted.

It seems bizarre to me, how would they even know whether the card is embossed or not? How often do you actually let a seller handle your card these days, you put it into the Chip & PIN terminal yourself, and it will only care about whether it can read the chip.0
