Swapping license plates

OK here goes, I've checked the DVLA site but still confused. Here's my situation.
I have a car with a personalised licence plate.
I have a second car with a standard plate.
I want to take the personalised one off my old car and put it on the new one.
I know I pay £80 use DVLA online and retain the personalised plate.
I think I use the DVLA online to transfer it to the new car.
Here's where I'm confused.
Is it really that simple.?
How do I now get another license plate number assigned to my old car so I can sell it?

They will send you a note and certificate to say you can now put the private plate on the new motor. They will also tell you the new number for the old car (which usually was the original number before you put the private plate on your old car) so you'll have to get a set of plates made for the old car.0

What happens with the new cars reg plate? Do I need to pay to remove it seeing as I don't want to keep that one?0

No, it just goes into the background, waiting for the other plate to be transferred off in the future.batesy2000 wrote: »What happens with the new cars reg plate? Do I need to pay to remove it seeing as I don't want to keep that one?
You can only have one plate allocated to a vehicle at any time. You MUST have one plate allocated to every vehicle at all times.
So when you transfer the plate off car 1, any previous plate is put back on. If the car had that plate from new, an age-related previously unissued plate is allocated.
When you transfer the plate onto car 2, the old plate is taken off and put on one side.0
