We are looking at a New York Hotel costing us £300 for two nights. If we book and pay here, through a travel agent, we have been told that we will have to pay the hotel a tourist tax when we are there.
Does anyone know how much we should keep aside for this if we book for two nights and if it should be paid in cash - US dollars or by credit card, please?
Thank you.

Trip Advisor is a good place for research, on the New York City forums it seems hotel tax is around 15% of the room rate per night, it is made up of various elements which together come to just under 15%.
The following is copied from said forum;
1. The hotel tax is 14.75% + $3.50 nightly city occupancy tax.
A. New York Hotel Room Occupancy Tax = 5.875%
B. New York City and State tax = 8.875%. consisting of
a. New York State Sales Tax: 4%
b. New York City Sales Tax: 4.5%
c. Transportation District Surcharge: 0.375%
C. New York City Occupancy Tax = $3.50 per night.
For simplicity of estimating, this is often rounded to 15%, so a room rate of $200 is budgeted at $230 after tax.
Some hotels also charge a "resort fee" which can be up to $80 per room per night.
Might be possible to find a tax inclusive rate from a travel/hotel booking site. We booked a flight/hotel with BA and didn't have to pay anymore locally in NYC0 -
The hotels own website should show you this information if you go through the booking process (but without actually booking of course)0

That is really helpful, pompeyrich, thank you. Thank you too Neil49. I did look on the hotel website but could not see the tax - I did not think of trying the booking process.
