ASDA Credit Card

Hi

I have just applied for an asda credit card to get 2p off petrol, i was accepted but the interest rate is 16.8% APR i set up a direct debit to pay the minimum payment (no option to pay card off in full each month).

I was wondering, if I use this card just to top up my car with petrol every other week, will i get charded interest when the statement comes in?

Do i have to pay the balance off before the statement comes in or can i phone asda and ask them to set up a direct debit to pay the whole balance off each month?

  • Direct debit for the full amount and as long as you dont purchase anything which counts as cash rates and/or miss payments/bounce dd's you will pay no interest

Very strange, not allowing you to pay the full amount each month

It's only during the application... it doesn't give an option for any other payment amount. Once it's been set up though it can be changed over the phone or online.

I also recently applied for the Asda card for the 2p discount. It's worth noting that at the time I applied there was 3 months interest free on purchases anyway so if the same applies to you then there's no real rush to get the DD changed now.

If you want to make sure its all done in time though just either change it online or when you call to activate the card they can change the DD payment option for you there and then.

Some CCC's are very sneaky in not giving both DD options. Knowing this, I set up my full amount DD with GE Capital - who run ASDA's credit card operation - by ringing up and asking to be sent a DD mandate. This has to show both options, although the print can be just this side of microscopic. I then filled this in for the full payment option, took a copy and sent off the original.

As expected, the confirmation letter came back for the minimum payment option. I then rang them. I didn't tell them how I asked for the DD at first and again, as expected, they tried to say that I must have asked for the minimum payment only. I then advised them as above and also made a formal complaint about their error.

This was very promptly acknowledged and a week or so later, I got a quite well-worded letter of "apology" and a £5 goodwill on the account. Result.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
