'Credit management' companies - will they affect my rating?

I have had a letter from a 'credit management' / 'debt recovery' company (as well as a barrage of phone calls!) regarding a utility bill from 2015 which is *supposedly* unpaid.
My question is - if companies like that are contacting me, will it affect my credit rating or whatever? I am aware that setting up bank accounts and referencing for rental properties do check credit history - will this utility bill drama come back to haunt me?
(Just for reference, I am certain it was paid - and I am trying to get proof.)

If will only affect you if entries are being put on your credit files.
It would be wise to check all three.0 -

Sorry but I am new to this so I sound a bit thick - what do you mean, what do I check? I don't even know where to begin with this. (We all have to start somewhere right??)0 -
There are 3 CRAs -
Experian (you can check this through the MSE credit Club)
Equifax (via Clearscore
Call Credit (via Noddle)
They are your three credit files, which will show what credit you have, any missed payments, defaults, CCJs etc.0 -

Thank you for clarifying and not judging my lack of knowledge - I feel a bit stupid not knowing what I'm doing right now!0
