Hi all
My friend has a HSBC account but wants the HSBC switching incentive - if he switches away and later switches back how long would he have to be gone for to be a new customer please?
Also curious about other banks

Don't know, but 25 years after closing a First Direct account, they would not consider me a 'new customer' !0

First Direct (owned by HSBC)
"Sorry, we can only offer this to people who haven't previously held an account with us,..."
http://www1.firstdirect.com/1/2/banking/switching-bank-accounts#at-a-glance
From what I have read in these forums they mean exactly that.0 -
The HSBC offer isn't as strict as FD's but "is only applicable to customers who are not existing HSBC current account holders on the date of application (and have not been since 1 January 2015 )", so anyone who has an HSBC current account at the moment won't be eligible.
Eligibility criteria for other banks' switching incentives will naturally vary but are easily checked (like this one) by clicking a couple of times from their home pages!0 -

Why don't you just berate him for his financial naivety - oh, and include yourself whilst you're at it.0 -
The answer is probably years!....and who knows what they would offer in the future.
Have a careful look at the Halifax tv advert it mentions you can't have the switching gift if you have already had one since 2012
Others probably have the same kind of rules.0 -

Totally called for given what you have posted in your Cedit Unions thread.0 -
The more political views people may disagree with but why would I berate my friend who is doing more than most would? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
