Hi
I'm having a new Worcester Bosch Greenstar combi boiler fitted tomorrow in a 1 bed flat. This is replacing on old combi that has to given up.
I've got the option on the quote to have a Magnetic Filter fitted for £150.
Does anyone know whether this is worthwhile?
Thanks
Dave

I don't have one but my elderly neighbour does and late last year they asked me if I could remove the filter assembly and clean it out. (this has to be done annually as part of the warranty terms).
This was a very easy job as the filter they have was fitted with a couple of valves and I was surprised at the amount of ferrous sludge stuck to the magnet.
What sort of filter assembly are they planning on using?
You can buy a quick release filter for about £100 and there is then the cost of the installation work and associated parts to add on so if it's this type then £150 doesn't seem too bad.0 -
Yes get one fitted. It will protect the new boiler and definitely worth doing.0

Thanks for your comments. The only other information I have on it is that it's a 'Worcester Filter'. As I'm having a Greenstar fitted I suspect it may be this:

If you're in an area with hard water you should also look for a scale inhibitor on the cold water supply to the combi boiler if you don't already have one working. Has your installer looked into that?
And for the magnetic filter on the central heating system, get one that has a gravity filter which deals with non-ferrous stuff as well - the stuff stuck to the magnet is only part of the problem. The Greenstar system filter in your email has this, but make sure that they don't install a cheaper filter that doesn't.
And make sure that they use an appropriate corrosion inhibitor when refilling the system.0 -
Thanks ComicGeek. No the supplier has made no reference to the scale inhibitor- I'll make a point of asking as we are in a hard water area.0

May or may not have been a time limited offer, but when I had mine fitted a year or so ago, installing the Worcester filter as opposed to a.n. other boosted the boiler warranty by one year0

I'd get Worcester condensate siphon fitted too

I had my boiler replaced last November, the system was only 11 years old. During the installation he did a system flush using a large version of the permanent filter, and I was amazed at the amount of stuff it took out. Once the system was clean he installed the permanent filter and corrosion inhibitor, and as the filter is right next to the boiler there's no excuse for them forgetting it on the annual service!0

Yes, get one, stops all the gunk messing up your boiler.0

I fitted one to our central heating system last year. I flush it through regularly and it's surprising how little gunk comes out.0
