If you go early October (the last week of Oct is usually half term) most places will be relatively quiet.

Greece is a good option for cheaper last minute deals. You could pick up a week bed and breakfast for £200 each quite easily if you booked it a month or two before you go. This would likely be a more basic property but you could still find somewhere with a pool and that's clean. Or just pay a bit more for something nicer. Crete, Kos and Rhodes would be your best bet weather wise but Santorini, zante, corfu and Mykonos should all still be ok early Oct.

Alternatively majorca is a good option. Plenty of walking routes and towns to explore and a fab bus service too. You can often get cheap flights with the likes of easyjet, Ryanair etc.

Flying in to Barcelona could open some options to. Either stay in Barcelona but towards the beach end or go out a bit to Sitges, Tarragona or even north towards tossa de mar.

The Italian lakes could be an option to although not really traditional beaches as such. Sorrento may be in budget for a week if you find the right deal too.

Another vote for Crete. It's a big island, so there are plenty of wonderful places untouched by mass tourism. For instance the southern coast in Rethymno region is very quiet (probably too quiet outside the summer) and the far east of the island, around Sitia, is also free from mass tourism and has some great sights. Lots to see if you're into ancient civilisations.

Croatia is very nice too, although I think I prefer Crete.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

Have you considered Jersey or Guernsey?
Adult only if you steer clear of half term.
    Good luck.

Both me and my husband would love to go to Jersey/Guernsey one day.
My husbands surname is so strange that if we went over there the name is like Smith or Jones here!

It certainly looks beautiful. Or even maybe Sark (where cars are banned from the roads)! Bliss!
