Printers and cheap ink compatibility - software blocker?

I need to get a new printer and was looking at an HP but one of the reviews said that they've got software installed that prevents you from using anything but they're own ink.
Given the rip-off prices of ink, I've always used cheap stuff off ebay as I don't print much.
Does anyone know if it is actually true that non-brand ink cannot be used and does it apply for other printer brands too?

I have an HP all-in-one printer/copier/scanner (model Photosmart B209a) that uses HP364 inks. I always used to use HP inks but the last set I bought were Jarbo compatibles - they've been fine and the printer and HP software both recognise them and indicate the ink levels.
I think what matters is what type of compatibles you buy - if you get compatibles with the correct chip then they'll likely work fine.0 -

Thanks. I was using compatibles for years with my Epson but wondered if things have changed. It was one review in amongst a lot of posts. Fingers crossed!0 -
When using compatibles, your printer will always throw up a message telling you it does not recognise the inks and if they are not genuine they will break your printer.
This is just a way for manufacturers to scare you into using genuine inks.
I have used Epson Printers for many years and always used compatibles without issue, although i get my inks from the same source, so i know the quality0 -
Tell us your source then please, I have an Epson and it stopped printing after a year of me using re-fillable cartridges."Imagination is more Important than knowledge"0
