How do we know if we ever had PPI?

I'm sure this question must have been asked many times before but this section of MSE is hard to search by using just PPI.
Anyway, I have read so many people's posts on how much they have claimed back from credit cards but did you initially know you had PPI or did you claim anyway 'just in case'?
I have boxes of paperwork so I have lots of account numbers but I wouldn't have a clue if I have ever paid PPI the same as I didn't have a clue I had paid PPI on an RBS loan which I successfully received a payout.
I'm using the Resolver reclaiming tool but what do you write for the questions:
How was the insurance sold to you?
How did you pay for the insurance?
Tell us what happened when you took out the payment protection insurance.
Tell us why you are now unhappy with the insurance.
On the top two there is the option 'can't remember' but what do we write for the other two? If I write "I don't know if I had PPI" will they just write back saying No. I didn't have PPI.
How did you claim back PPI when you didn't know you even had it? Thanks in advance.

Phone the card companies direct and ask them if you had PPI, at least you have the account numbers.
See what they say and take it from there.0 -
If I write "I don't know if I had PPI" will they just write back saying No. I didn't have PPI.
Unlike loan PPI, where the insurance was generally added at the earliest stage and only showed on the agreement, credit card PPI will show on every monthly statement when your account had an outstanding balance.
You say you have "boxes of paperwork", so check through the old statements. Any PPI (if you paid it) will be itemised on a separate line.
The reason the Resolver template doesn't have a drop down option for stating that you don't know if you had PPI is that it is not a valid complaint for you to say that.
Understand that your loan PPI was not refunded because you didn't know you had it, even if that was your "complaint". The Bank will have investigated and found other failings, but not that you simply forgot about it.
Forget Resolver; do some proper research and if you had PPI and it was mis-sold to you then make a complaint direct to the card provider.0 -
Thanks for that Moneyineptitude. It sounds very much different from a loan PPI.
