Getting rid of spiders!

Noticed quite a few in my current property probably since I live in a ground floor flat with small garden with tree at front and communal garden at back
And whilst spiders creep me out im just getting fed up of having them in middle of floor especially in hallway.
I don't know if theres some nest as keep seeing baby ones in bathroom and theres a small pinky thickness sized hole in bathroom plaster in corner ceiling which is around the place I find them often.
I just dont want to stand on one and squish it, or have one crawling on me so rather move them along.
Whats best way to stop them coming in? If its the hole in bathroom what else is there?
I also have extractor fans in bathroom and kitchen could they be coming in there?

I would suggest filling any holes in the plaster work etc, move furniture and vacuum behind regularly - spiders don't like being disturbed.
In the autumn we collect conkers and put them in the corners of every room, it is surprisingly effective as apparently they don't the smell of them.0 -
We have a house cat and have noticed that we have never seen a decent sized spider in our house for years. Not even behind TV cabinets etc. when we move them.
I think it must be a bit of nocturnal passtime for her which she seems to have become more and more adept at over the years!• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

Peppermint oil! I read that this keeps spiders away so I tried it last year and it really does work.
It has to be the 100% essential oil - I bought it from ebay or amazon.
I just put some on a sponge and wiped it generously around all the window openings and we didn't have a single spider for months.0 -

Ha! Yes! Cats are great for clearing out the big spiders. Although my Bert didn't seem to like to eat the legs. We'd find little piles of spider legs at the scene of the crime...0 -
All good advice mentioned already .:)
What about those plugs that are supposed to deter insects and mice ?
Also, insect curtain ?0 -
Peppermint oil +1. I mix it with water in a spray bottle and spray liberally around doors, windows, crevices. plus makes the house smell lovely.
My sister swears by conkers, in the corners of each room.
I also bought some 'deathlac' i think it was called from Amazon. You spray it around the outside of the house or along corners/edges and i think it kills them when they walk through it. Sorry for spider-lovers.
My house was full of spiders when i moved in (fully grown ones...) and now i only come across the odd one, who probably came it from outside when the door was left open.0 -
People swear by those plug in things, people are idiots.
You normally only see spiders en-mass for a few week period, people go out and buy those stupid plug in things just as that period is tailing off and then they assume it's worked.
Also the other stuff, the old wives tails, none of those work either.
Insecticide spray does work, having a cat does work.
The other thing that's good is not killing off the "daddy long legs" spiders (not to be confused with crane flies), as these will very efficiently catch and eat the house spiders that people hate so much.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Yup, August is the time they normally all come out of the woodwork.Strider590 wrote: »Also the other stuff, the old wives tails, none of those work either.
Obviously you didn't use conkers harvested at gloaming, and placed on a rose petal whilst standing on one leg and facing South.

Thanks so far, well I have seen then for months but originally it was mostly in bathroom and other time running between my computer desk and under sofa (my sofa is next to window and veranda door)
Don't think I have ever seen one in kitchen but the third most common was the hall outside the bathroom, in last week or so they seem to hide in a small gap in carpet by the door.
I have also seen them in gap in carpet in bedroom so it always seems to be gaps.
May of had them before but the ones right now are quite big rather than the small ones I had months ago.0 -

Sounds similar to my place, some of them were huge:eek:
Our house is old, so lots of cracks and crevices for them to hide.
Peppermint oil cost a few quid, conkers are free from your local park, and get some polyfiller for the gaps in your bathroom to stop the hidey-holes.
Put conkers in the corners of your room/window sills and spray the room lightly with peppermint oil mixed with water where you see them most. I sprayed around all the skirting boards as they loved to hide under there...
I used it maybe every-other day and after a week i saw no more!
Deathlac is also good, like i said i have used it when our house was crawling with them, i saw at least one large one every day. It stops them getting in but also stops them escaping so i just found dead spiders when i moved furniture.
I used deathlac tokill the majority of them off, and then peppermint oil to deter them .0
