Are you married/in a civil partnership with the man and his estranged wife?

You expect someone to admit on here if their partner is a bigamist?

I assumed that the OP and the partner live together, surely that's the reason why the OP was concerned that somehow the debt may land on them?

You'd have to open the letter to know what it said, wouldn't you?

Maybe the partner opened it and read it to them ?

If that's the case then there's no problem! :)

I got the impression, not sure how, that the OP and the partner weren't together. Probably wrong, though.:(

As I already said partner opened it and showed me. I had no idea he was in debt. Bit of a shock. I have the responsibility of three young kids and my elderly mentally ill mother living with me and could be doing without the pressure of this hanging over my head.

On the plus side knowing it's not a financial burden on me is a relief. Thanks again to everyone for your help.

I apologise for the assumption, in that case. :o

Although you're not liable, if it gets to the point of bailiffs, they could come after your stuff if you live together and can't prove it's yours not his.

He might become a financial burden on you, if he has to spend a lot on paying off the arrears and looks to you to fund more of your shared lifestyle. Does he have the funds to pay it off now, or the income to set up a payment plan? In absolute dire circumstances people can be imprisoned for failure to pay council tax so he needs to address this seriously and not rely on any previous informal agreement from the estranged wife that she'll take care of the arrears - if he was liable for the council tax at the time he's still liable for the arrears now.
    June 2017: owe £16,818.
    June 2018: owe £13,263.
