Any broker who says they specialise in X,Y or Z are usually more expensive than ones who don't claim to be. Adrian Flux who specialise in performance cars actually wanted over three and a half times what I ended up being insured by Churchill for.
    Then your car/requirement wasn't specialist.

If it had been, you'd have been MUCH better off with a specialist insurer. They might have been your only option - especially when you get into specialist requirements for what the policy actually covers.

Fish specialize in disabled drivers because their package includes the extras that disabled people might need. Vehicles generally adapted for wheel chairs and special arrangements made to get disabled people (and carers) and their equipment back home safely when called upon. I imagine you would pay more because they have (supposedly) a lot more to offer for the disabled.

But if you have no need of those special facilities then you could get insurance from any other number of sources at a less costly rate. As others have said.

I have read that insurance companies are under an obligation not to load premiums just because people are disabled. There is protection under the disability discrimination legislation.

It turns out that Fish sent me an erroneous quote, something went wrong in the system and it obviously calculated it completely wrong. Anyway, they've now quoted me £566.

The other person is right, I think you get Green Flag as part of the package. To be honest with you, a lot of these breakdown services are only good for me if I need something to enter the vehicle. I can't get in any other vehicles so it's not worth paying extra for recovery.

Anyway, I just contacted Direct Line and I just got my insurance for £315. This price includes the no claims bonus thing. If I didn't go for that then it would have been less than £300 for my insurance. If I want green flag then that will be an extra £89. I'll have a look around and see what the AA or RAC are offering. If I can't get anything cheaper than £89, then I just go back and add that to my policy.

But I must say I am well chuffed with £315, it's made my day.

So the threat of doubling the premium (followed by the old "Oh, sorry, must have been a mistake..." trick) has caused you to look around for the first time in a quarter of a century - and saved you 40% from last year's...

Don't forget the next step is to use comparison sites to see if you can get it even cheaper!.

Yeah actually it was unless you don't consider a modified MX5 specialist.

If you can insure it easily with a mainstream insurer, and get the policy you want, then it really isn't specialist.
