Hello I was wondering if anyone could help me-

I previously had my electricity supply with I think E-on (although would need to check bank statements to confirm),
but whoever the supplier was I was with I was with them for over 1year, had a monthly direct-debit setup, and so no payment was ever missed or anything like that.

I informed them that I needed to cancel with them as I was moving out of my flat back in early March 2017,
they were totally fine about it and just said they would do a final meter reading and debit/credit me accordingly.

2weeks later I go a letter from them (pretty sure it was E-on) saying that my account was in credit of approx £500 (as id been paying an extremely high amount per month in my DD), and so they enclosed a cheque for that amount. :)

I moved out of that property back in early March 2017.

Today at my new address though I got a letter through from a Debt Collection agency,
it's got my correct name however the address which they say the letter is relating to is not correct for what my previous address was (there were 2 Flat number 4s at the same postcode, but different building names, and the address they've got is the different building name).

The letter goes onto say that they have been instructed by Scottish Power to recover an overdue balance of £433 from me.... :O

1stly I have never ever had an account with Scottish Power.
2ndly I have never had any debt with electricity since i pay via DD.
3rdly my last supplier, i left back in March and they owed/paid me over £500.

But so does anyone know the best way to get this sorted please,
as i will be extremely angry if this has in any way affected my Credit rating!!:mad::mad:
Since im planning on getting a mortgage next year, but so i cant have any of this kinda of rubbish or nonsense against my name.

Im planning on phoning-up this DCA tomorrow, but how exactly can i get this whole thing cleared off out of my name, and with no trace of any of it on my credit rating??

Thankyou

The only explanation that i can possibly think of is that if when i moved out of the flat,
the electricity supply was for some reason taken over by Scottish Power,
but the landlord never told them his details as he was always a payment-evader.

And so if he didn't pay any of the electricity bills for the last 3months, that is the balance which is now being chasedup...??

Not sure how they would know my name though.

When you moved into this address, did you, (1), inform the current supplier of your occupancy, or did you, (2), just contact Eon and sign up with them ?
The rule is that you must always initially sign up with the present supplier, and only when you have an account with them, can you Switch to another.
If you did 2, I'm afraid it's possible you had a 'live' account with the current supplier - Scot Power? - the whole time you were in the dwelling.

With that said, Scot Power botched a software upgrade and their systems are in a real pickle, so nothing they say can be taken at face value

I'm sorry, I do not understand your posts

What you need is a copy of the original bill (which presumably you have if it's got the wrong address on)

If it's not your (past) address, then it's not your bill.
(assuming it really is another correct address, and not a simple error in the complicated address you appeared to have)

With the bill, it will specify the meter readings and the period it applies to. Compare that to the bills you have already paid to Eon as you cannot be charged for the same energy twice.
If the period is outside of your tenancy agreement, contact the supplier with evidence of such.
