Can't back up my Samsung phone because laptop says its not connected

I have never been able to back up my phone (Samsung), because even though I connect it with a cable, it keeps telling me to connect it.
I don't understand as when I plug the phone into the laptop, it charges it, I have even transfered photos over from the phone to laptop, yet it doesn't recognise it is plugged in when trying to back up. I have updated the software on the phone an the laptop.
Same thing happens when I plug another phone in (Nokia), that keeps telling me to connect that in too, yet that also charges whilst plugged in.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

Did the laptop download and install the necessary drivers for your particular handset?0

When you connect your mobile to your pc the default connection is to charge it.
To change that to other connection options you have to use the top pull down screen where you can select alternatives.
I'm presuming you have a smart phone otherwise this isn't an option.0 -
..or maybe you're using a power-only usb lead...yes they are out there. If there's no data lines in the lead the pc won't see either phone........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Hi, yes a smartphone, there doesn't seem to be an option on the drop down screen to select alternatives. When you connect your mobile to your pc the default connection is to charge it.
