New Credit Card Limit

Is there any way of knowing what credit limit I will be offered before I apply for a new card?

Nationwide contacted me in April offering me a Select card with 0% for a year and a limit of £8,850. Will other companies give me an indicative figure before I make an application and incur a hard search?

No, not usually. Until they've checked your credit files, their internal algorithms won't be able to decide what limit to give you. This board is littered with stories of "I want to transfer to a 0% card, but they haven't given me a high enough limit".

Most cards will offer to increase your limit once you've had them for a while, when they can see that you've been running your account sensibly.

Not before you make an application or in some cases even immediately after your application has been successful. American Express credit card was the only one which quoted my credit limit on acceptance while in all other cases I had to wait for written confirmation.

Halifax clarity told me mine online, straight after checking and acceptance, but not before.

From my experience and others I know....Virgin tends to give the biggest initial limits

MBNA also give good initial limits. Not sure if that will change under LBG though.
