Need to upgrade so i can install xp. As I'm still on dialup can you ordinarily phone out while system is on with newer modems. Also, anybody got any modem recommends with pros and cons. Have been on the Intel site to download an update for my existing modem but too daunting a task to install being a newbie to winzip - anyone know an idiots guide to do it as well. Thanks in advance . tweeter

Many files on the Internet are packaged as compressed files that don't extract themselves. Most compressed PC files are stored in the ZIP format (the file's name ends in .zip). To decompress ZIP files, you need a special shareware (try before you buy) program called WinZip, which you can download from https://www.winzip.com. WinZip comes as a self-extracting, self-installing file. After installing WinZip, double-click the ZIP file you downloaded. WinZip displays a list of files in the ZIP file. If a Setup or Install file is in the list, double-click it. Otherwise, click the Extract button to decompress the files.
I always went for U.S Robotics for 56k modems. External always gave me the best connection speeds. http://www.usr-emea.com/loc-index.asp?loc=unkg0 -
I don't V92 adds what you want. I think it was mainly an update increase the upload speed slightly, but I've never seen anything to allow you to use to make calls and use a conventional dialup connection at the same time on the same line (I cannot see how it would work).
There should be no need to upgrade to V92 to install XP. I've used V90 modems on quite a few XP computers.
Modem makes: as T4i = US Robotics / 3Com. I've still got my Sportser with answerphone built in.
If you need to get a modem I would look in local papers / clearance sections in shops / Ebay. You should be able to pick them up for next to nothing.
If you are a light internet user then you might want to look at some of the low user ADSL packages (Metronet can be attractive - it starts from £10 per month +£60 activation). That would free your phone line up to make calls.Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

After installing xp upgrade from 98, the email facility wouldn't work.Going back over what I'd done "Windows Setup" informed me that there were incompatible version issues and the HaM Configuration(in the control pane) should be udated among other things - which I did to no avail using device manager. So I downloaded an update from Intel which came in zip file and am now stuck as there are no installation files only exe files and stuff inside and I'm not experienced enough to understand the path process to get these files or are they drivers to install and change from v90 to v92.I thought maybe I should just get a new modem and solve the problem because they come with cd's to do it. I'm probably way off beam with all this and should be on a different tack altogether but can't see past my blinkers yet.Any help would be appreciated .tweeterPeel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. You wont be able to use the phone at the same time that you are connected to the internet with a dialup modem. Sorry, but it's Modem or Voice call only. If you need the phone at the same time as you're online then it's broadband for you as blinky says.0

I wasn't to worried about the phone aspect, as I think now that some of these modems can put the internet on hold whilst phoning out- its the fact that I had to uninstall xp and hope to come up with some answers. Never heard of that. I have heard that you can get notification of incomming calls but you would have to get offline to take them and similarly to make an outgoing call, you will have to disconnect from the internet or you wont have a dialling tone. I'll repeat what I said earlier :- Internet OR phone.0 -
I don't think it is necessary to XP to have v92. What is more is that not all ISPs modems are v92, so it may be redundant to fit one.
The v92 modem does have the facility to disconnect the internet connection on an incoming call and automatically reconnect afterwards. Also I think there are some speed advantages; maybe the upload speed is faster than a v90 (48 vs 33.6 ?)
But it's not such a big deal on incoming calls. Some modems have an optional install of another program that will give a warning on incoming calls anyway - you need BT's Call Waiting service at £1.75 a month. Then disconnect manually and the phone rings.
However there are compatibility issues with some Intel modems. When my ISP changed the access phone number a while back, the speed dropped significantly 50.6 to about 34; they advised me to get a different make (including the one I had!). Updating the drivers either via Microsoft or Intel was no improvement. After finding one in PCWorld's returns for £5 I was fine.
But your problem sounds different and I don't understand it.0 -
With xp installed I couldn't mail out or go on line.I realised there was some kind compatibilty problem.Microsoft's readout below lead me to believe its to do with updating the modem.I tried the device manager to update the driver, when that didn't work I went to the Intel site and down loaded a file from them, but none of the files were self installing and as I don't know the way install these exe files I'm stuck. So I thought that the answer would be to buy a new modem- one you could dial out while putting the internet on hold so to speak.
Setup has found hardware on your computer that is incompatible with
(that is, it does not work with) Windows XP.
Hardware That Might Need Additional Files
The following hardware might need additional files in order to work
with Windows XP. Contact your hardware vendors to obtain Windows XP
compatible updates. In many cases, if a Windows XP version is not yet
available, a Windows 2000 compatible update should work. It is
recommended that you obtain these drivers in advance.

Before you upgrade to Windows XP, you should remove any incompatible

Ok. I installed th first modem as well as I got the PC 2nd hand. I did download the driver update, but it didn't help with those different modem racks.
It sounds like your modem or its drivers are a bit older (original with the PC?), so the advice sounds useful. I'm not an expert at all myself, but I did manage to install the drivers - I just can't remember how I did it. I think it was double-click the zip file, then something else, perhaps the exe file itself.
It may well be worth a new modem anyway; slightly older ones have a max speed of 33.6 I think. If you can get one under £10, go for that - nb in PCWorld the cheap Sitecom one in a black/turquoise box is an Intel one, which as I said has compatibilty issues with some ISP modem racks. I got a Conexant one branded PhonicPro, also greeny blue. Don't go for a 'soft' modem, which is so cheapskate it uses the PC to do most of the work.
It's a pity all the real pundits are on broadband now, as your query isn't quite attracting the best advice if I'm replying.0 -
Who makes the modem?
When you said you downloaded the drivers but you didnt know how to install what files were there?
Install.exe?0
