Can I replace an analogue receiver with a digital one

Hi all
Quick question if anyone can help please.
My farther has an analogue receiver - a Pace PRD800 and it has recently died.
We took it to two shops inc one who specialises in satellite set ups and further specialises in setting them up for non UK viewers (we are German so my dad used to watch the free to air German progs (I think it may be from the astra 19 satellite).
Seems it cannot be fixed - PSU gone and cannot get replacements.
So we were going to plan b which was to get a replacement - so plan b is scuppered as one cannot get analogue boxes any more
. For reasons I can't be bothered going in to I don't want to get one off eBay.
So part of plan b was to ring Maplins and see if they had any - now one store reeled off several model numbers but on checking they were digital. So I rang a different Maplins store to asj if these would actually work as the previous box was analogue and would they work with the same dish.
They did not know and said I should ring their tech bods and gave me their number.
They advised that yes a digital receiver would work no problem and no need for a new dish,
So question is are any of you knowledgeable in this area and do you agree that a digital receiver would work ?
Thanks for any replies in advance - much appreciated

Should work fine!
My dad had an old analogue system(was free with sky) facing Eutelsat for the polish channels and free english channels. When they packed up and went digital we bought him the digital receiver for free-to-air channels that Lidl sell every so often for about £60.
We just plugged the receiver into the old analogue cable, dish and LNB.
Worked first time, which even surprised me!!
Seemed to be plenty of free german channels on eutelsat, don't know how good these channel are? This would require a little persistance in dish fiddling to find it though. Only a slight difference from astra.0 -

Thanks for that - since my post it seems his box is likely to be repairable after all and we are likely going to take this course of action.Hate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing

I would say, take it to someone who knows what they are doing! Cannot get replacements, what a joke! You will find info and repair kits on the net if you look but any decent electronics engineer can fault find down to individual component level and repair it.
:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Analogue receivers are a thing of the past, A digital receiver will work fine and Astra 1 carries about 600 Digital TV stations and 250 radio, If you want my recomendations on a receiver id go for a Technomate TM1000D, you may be able to get the receiver fixed but it will cost as much as buying a new digital receiver which start at anything from 39.99 up0

thanks for that.
I have posted in several other places on this and you answer above seems to not be complete.
Yes we could substitue a digital box **BUT** it would need a new LNB (they are different for analogue and digital) and the dish would need repositioning.
Bearing in mind my fathers age (83) and his ill health and likely life expectancy I think we are likely to go with a repair of his relic analogue satelite box.
