I've got a couple of pics to show what I'm working with now! What I would like to do is remove the centre post that doesn't really seem to do much... My thought at the moment is to replace the left and right posts (not the newel post on the far right) with something a bit heavier (maybe 4" x 4" instead of the 4" x 2" that's already there) to allow me to remove the centre post.

What are your thoughts on this? I work in engineering so brackets/ supports etc wouldn't be a problem to get made up for additional support.

As you can see there isn't much space between the vertical posts which kind of ruin my bookshelves idea, along with the fact that none of them seem to be running square! The 2 small vertical posts are on the outer edges - surely the load is going down the 2 outside posts and not the centre one?

    Once again,my thanks in advance,

  • The stringers are just there for the plasterboard to be nailed onto something. Remove safely and use both outside posts as support for your shelves.
