cost of converting garage into a bedroom?

Hello.
I have been toying with the idea of converting my integral garage into a bedroom and asked a builder doing the same locally and they quoted in the region of £20,000.
This cant be true as its basically bricking up the front wall of which most would be taken up by electrics and all the internals but cant see how it could come to anywhere that figure.
Anyone had similar done recently could advise on the price please?

Seriously........... That figure is ridiculous, all that's needed is the main door removing, the wall bricking up, battens on the interior walls, cavity insulation between, plasterboard on top, same for the ceiling, electrics wired in (DIY if capable). It's not a small job, but it's not a £20'000 job.

I think there's very little science behind that figure, it's simply too much.

I'm looking to have exactly the same work done and checked an online calculator a few weeks back for a rough guide. The budget option came back as £7k, standard was £10k and deluxe £13k-ish.

I've had a variety of builders around to view, advise and give quotes. I'm based in the South East and the highest quote for the job was just under £14k, lowest £8k. I've just found a company offering to do the conversion plus toilet/shower room extension (also downstairs but outside of garage) for £15k all in.

Insulation will be the main issue.

It is surprising how much apparently useful space you will use - as you fit insulation to the floor ( garage floor will be lower than the rest of the house) - the walls will be single rather than cavity wall - similarly the ceiling (which may be asbestos)

But £20k no - perhaps £7-8k
