Thank you. I'll have another go tomorrow.

I think I might have a problem though. Just tried to get a shower and it was luke warm to cold, almost as running of what was left in tank when the heating hasn't been on for a day.
Yet I'm sure I popped the heating and water on earlier today, I think it took a while to reignite but I don't recall any problems. I'll check the rads other taps tomorrow when I pop it on in the evening. Any thoughts? I can't see how anything I've done should have caused this? *sighs*

Turned "valve thing" clockwise. Tested tap, water still ran a little, checked if I could turn it any more (gently). Still ran, couldn't get tap top off, turned it back on until stopped, then turned it a quarter the other way as advised.

I did try both valves, but I'm fairly confident they are back where they were. I did notice one seemed to go around many times but did stop eventually, and the other valve only went maybe 1 turn. (Unsure of exact number as didn't count at the time).

Grumbles, sorry to ask again but any advice before I get killed tomorrow when the family finds out?

Sounds like there is an issue with the gate valves, they are notorious (well, maybe that's too strong a word) for not opening/closing fully after some years in service. It might be an idea to ask a plumber/heating engineer to call (on a non-emergency basis) and they could explain to you the function of each of the pipes/valves and remove your tap top and replace the washer or ceramic cartridge.

Bit late now but always look for an isolation valve on the actual feed pipe to the tap, very easy way to shut off water rather than various valves in airing cupboard.
Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.
