No way. Not unless he pays half the mortgage. Even then until the relationship is tried and tested she should be in absolute control of her very precious asset.
  • She could ask her solicitor to set up an agreement where-by her share of the property as it stands today would be protected if the couple split up in the future
  • Definately don't put him on the deeds, make him pay rent and share the bills. Why should he freeload when she's paying for the investment. If he complains he can go rent somewhere else!
  • Absolutely NO!!!!! Do not put him on the Deeds. What sort of a 'man' is he?! I'm sorry, but he sounds like a looser to me! Don't risk your home that you have worked so hard for. If he doesn't want to live with you in your house, on your terms, let him go and live elsewhere. If he does move in, draw up a living agreement with a solicitor (for c £100) to establish what he is going to pay you in rent and that he will at no time be an owner of the property. Its very easy to do and a good investment.
  • 2 commonly misspelled words:
    • definitely (not definately)
    (contains the word "finite")
    • separate (not seperate)
    (think "to part")

    Here endeth the lesson.
  • Funnily enough I could have written the exact dilemma myself.....Me a nice homeowner, boyfriend in financial difficulty.....demanding to go on my deeds!! You work hard, save, take responsibility for your income & outgoings....and then someone wants a piece of your hard earned pie!! Personally I'd get rid!! .....and I did!

If Brad really wants to make a go of things, he'll understand & respect your need to protect your home.

Once he's able to show that he is able to contribute appropriately, and maintain that, then maybe you could consider at some time in the future, when he's shown some financial responsibilty, moving to a new place. Each having put the same in!

Do not put his name on anything at this time.......I'm sure if you suggeted him raising the funds to buy half of your property off you it would be a very different story.

However joint mortgage means that each one of you is responsible for the full amount should one of you (him) be unable to contribute their half. So then there's the question of do you buy something that you can't afford alone!
  • If I were Jen, I definitely wouldn't put Brad on the deeds, but agree with those who have said this doesn't mean she is totally protected.

They should both sit down and discuss their options - if they trust each other enough to move in together, they've got to be open with each other about finances.......

    IF YOU'RE SKINT......
Do I need it? Can I afford it? Can I find it cheaper anywhere else?

    IF YOU'RE NOT SKINT......
Will I use it? Is it worth it? Can I find it cheaper anywhere else?

Everybody is saying Jen don't do it. I wonder if it had been Jen moving into Brads house the responses would have been different? For example, I have these conversations occaisonally with people I know. I say theres no point in getting married because the woman will come in and take my house if it all went wrong. I get the usual, "Well theres no point in getting with anyone at all if you think like that!" I think this is because I'm a bloke trying to protect my assets. If its a girl, then its not a problem it seems. Maybe I am wrong but this is what it feels like. I've been there before, I've had to buy my ex gf out and I don't want to do it again.

The way out of this that I can see is to either sell or rent out my property and the future partner of mine does the same if she has any property. Then we both put down an equal deposit on a new house to live in with all bills 50-50. No arguements if a split did happen. I want to be as happy as anyone but I don't think its a sin to protects ones assets which have been bulit up way before any new relationship.

Absolutely, totally, completely, utterly, entirely, categorically NO.
Why would that toe rag Brad even ask her that if she had bought it herself before she met him.. Big deal he's paying his way... he'd have to pay his own way if he rented his own place anyway, (And I doubt a landlord would put him on their deeds in that situation) the girls hardly going to let him stay in the house for free!!! A complete Waster, just after her money I'd say.. Jenifer should keep the deeds in her name & If Brad don't like it, Tough!!. Dump Him..
