Excess Insurance for personal cars

I was browsing through to see if there is any excess insurance available for personal cars. Came across excess-insurance at at shortfall.co.uk

Looks like it's a good way to decrease insurance cost by taking bigger excess and insuring the bigger excess at the same time.
Has anyone tried this?

It works if your car is a write off.

But if your car is in an accident, and the repair cost is less than the excess, then you can't claim on your car insurance for the repairs, thus have no excess to recover from the excess insurance. You're then stuck with the repair bill yourself.

It's worth checking the cost if you adjust your excess down to zero.

My quote had a £500 excess and to insure the excess was about £30.
I changed the excess from £500 to £0. The original insurance quote only went up by £8.

ETA: obviously I'm referring to the voluntary excess, not compulsory.
